Flames nip Avs amidst Iginla trade talks
Mar 28, 2013 - 5:55 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Mike Cammalleri scored two second-period goals and the Flames edged the Colorado Avalanche, 4-3, on the night the Jarome Iginla era in Calgary ended.Iginla had played 441 consecutive games before being a healthy scratch Wednesday night.
Shortly after the game, the Flames announced that they have traded their franchise icon and captain to Pittsburgh. The Flames received forwards Kenneth Agostino and Ben Hanowski and the Penguins' first-round pick at this year's NHL Draft.
Jiri Hudler and Steve Begin each lit the lamp in the first period for the Flames, who have won eight straight at Saddledome.
"I give lots of credit to our players, because they showed great focus," Calgary coach Bob Hartley said of his team playing without Iginla. "We have lots of great veterans, so obviously leadership is not a problem."
Ryan O'Reilly had a goal and an assist for Colorado, which fell to 0-7-3 in its last 10 on the road. The Avalanche have lost three straight and seven of eight overall.
"We just got outplayed," Colorado coach Joe Sacco admitted. "We got beat to loose pucks, and they wanted it more than we did in the first period."
Down 2-0, Jamie McGinn put Colorado on the board 4:29 into the second period.
Cammalleri, though, restored Calgary's two-goal lead 12 seconds later when he buried a rebound in the slot.
Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog beat Calgary goalie Joey MacDonald from a sharp angle at 9:14 of the middle frame, but Cammalleri, once again, pushed the margin back to two with a one-timer a little over three minutes later.
While on a power play, a stick clipped Landeskog and Calgary's Alex Tanguay was accused of committing the infraction, giving the Avalanche a lengthy two- man advantage. Replays, however, showed Landeskog being struck by a teammate's stick.
For the first time this season, Colorado potted a goal during a 5-on-3 advantage. After working the puck around the Calgary zone, O'Reilly fired the puck into the back of the net with 7:26 remaining in the third period.
The Avalanche pulled goalie Semyon Varlamov, but their comeback bid was thwarted.
Calgary built a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. Hudler put home his own rebound from in close on a power play at the 8:10 mark, then Begin whipped a backhander from a sharp angle past Varlamov at 12:01.
