Oilers top Flames, inch closer to playoff spot
Apr 2, 2013 - 6:45 AM Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Devan Dubnyk posted 33 stops as the Edmonton Oilers took a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames in the front end of a home-and- home on Monday.Justin Schultz had a goal and two assists while Taylor Hall, Ryan Jones and Nail Yakupov each gave a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who have won four straight to move just one point back of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Brian McGrattan's goal late in the third period kept the Flames from getting blanked, but the team lost for the sixth time in their last eight games and have dropped a team record 11 straight on the road.
Miikka Kiprusoff was yanked late in the first period after giving up three goals on six shots while Joey MacDonald posted 13 saves the rest of the way.
"I felt that we came out good...but a couple of misreads in our zone and the puck was in our net," Flames head coach Bob Hartley said.
Before the game, Calgary announced it had traded defenseman Jay Bouwmeester to the St. Louis Blues for a pair of players and a first round draft pick in either 2013 or 2014. This trade comes several days after the team traded captain Jarome Iginla to Pittsburgh for a pair of players and a first round draft pick.
These two clubs will meet in Calgary on Wednesday.
Edmonton had opened its 4-0 win over Vancouver on Saturday with four goals in the first 7:53 of the game, and the team again used a big first period to take control of this game early.
Schultz got things going at the 3:52 mark when Hall threw a pass from the right boards to the front where Schultz wristed it home for his sixth of the year.
Hall, who posted the fastest hat trick in Oilers history on Saturday, got on the board near the midway mark of the period as Schultz picked off the puck at the right point and skated down to the right circle before feeding it over to Hall, who roofed it for his 12th of the season.
Jones got in on the action at 16:28 as he caught up to the puck in the Calgary end down the right wing and chipped it in one-handed from a sharp angle.
After the second period passed without a goal, Yakupov made it a 4-0 game with a quick wrist shot from the slot off a feed from Jones.
McGrattan spoiled Dubnyk's shutout bid after putting the puck home off a right circle faceoff win with 1:32 to play.
"It always stings when you lose your shutout late in the game like that, but it's 4-0, and right now as a group we need wins and we need them to keep coming and that's the most important thing," Dubnyk said.
