Pavelski nets winner in third for Sharks

Apr 6, 2013 - 7:40 AM San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Joe Pavelski scored the winner late in the third period as the San Jose Sharks took a 2-1 decision over the Calgary Flames on Friday.

Dan Boyle scored the other goal while Antti Niemi made 23 stops for the Sharks, who have won seven straight games. With 46 points, the team moved a point ahead of Los Angeles for fourth place in the Western Conference.

"As a group, we're playing well," said Pavelski. "Everyone's contributing."

Mikael Backlund scored the lone goal of the game for the Flames, who have lost 12 straight games on the road. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 39 shots in the loss.

The Sharks tied the game at 1-1 just 2:40 into the third period as Logan Couture sent a pass from the right boards to the slot where Boyle's short slap shot sailed past Kiprusoff.

"It's tough at the end of the game," said Kiprusoff. "I didn't get my leg out far enough."

In the latter stages of the third period, San Jose fought for the puck behind the Calgary net and got it out front. Pavelski eventually wrapped it in from the left side with 2:06 to play.

Calgary got Kiprusoff out of the net with 1 1/2 minutes left, but was unable to net the equalizer.

The only other goal of this game came with 2:05 to play in the first period while Calgary was on the power play as a right circle faceoff win saw Backlund eventually wrist the puck home from the top of the right circle to give the Flames a 1-0 lead.
