Avs beat the clock and Canucks in Denver

Apr 13, 2013 - 10:13 PM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Jan Hejda scored the game-winning goal with eight seconds left as the Colorado Avalanche edged the Vancouver Canucks, 4-3, on Saturday.

P.A. Parenteau, Cody McLeod and Gabriel Landeskog also tallied for the Avalanche, who earned their first regulation win over Vancouver since Oct. 3, 2009.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 24-of-27 shots in the victory.

Maxim Lapierre, Jannik Hansen and Jason Garrison scored one goal apiece for the Canucks, who had won four straight entering the contest.

Cory Schneider made 22 saves but allowed all four goals in the setback.

With the final seconds ticking away, Colorado was able to keep the puck in the Vancouver zone. David Jones dropped the puck back to Hejda near the blue line on the left side of the ice. Hejda, who had gone 54 games without a goal, ripped a one-timer past Schneider for the game-winner.

"There's not too much time to think about taking a shot. I just took it and thankfully it was a good one," Hejda said. "I do not think that they played their best game today, but we played well. We just had to keep it simple, and kept the puck in their zone."

Landeskog intercepted Kevin Bieksa's cross-ice pass in the Canucks' zone and fired into the back of the net to give the Avs a 1-0 lead just 1:50 into the game.

"I saw two guys, but you cannot make assumptions, it was my fault. It seemed like we had a few brain cramps today. Our team's strength is when we play well in our end, but we did not do that today," Bieksa said.

Lapierre tied the game 4 1/2 minutes into the middle session. Ryan Kesler found Lapierre in the right slot, and the center beat Giguere with a wrister to make it 1-1.

Hansen gave the Canucks a 2-1 lead 2:14 later. Hansen took a pass from Daniel Sedin in front of the goal and pounded it home.

McLeod scored just over two minutes into the final session to knot things up at 2-2, but Garrison potted a slap shot 1:25 later to put Vancouver ahead once again.

Parenteau took a pass from Matt Duchene in traffic, but was able to control the disc long enough to beat Schneider with a wrister at the 12:57 mark to tie the game at 3-3.

Game Notes

Vancouver won the season series 3-1 ... Hejda was the third Colorado defenseman to score a goal this season ... Vancouver, which sits atop the Northwest Division standings with 52 points, will visit the Nashville Predators on Monday ... The Avs will host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday.
