Final
Pominville, Wild down Flames
Apr 16, 2013 - 4:48 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Jason Pominville scored twice to lead the Minnesota Wild in a 4-3 win over the Calgary Flames on Monday.Mikko Koivu and Pierre-Marc Bouchard each had a goal for the Wild, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Niklas Backstrom made 20 stops in the win.
The win gives Minnesota 49 points on the season and the team now sits all alone in sixth place in the Western Conference, one ahead of St. Louis.
"We can be better in a few areas, but it was a good road win," said Minnesota head coach Mike Yeo. "I find that when you're doing the right thing a lot of the time you see the game's breaks like that."
Jiri Hudler and Sven Baertschi each scored and Ben Hanowski had his first career goal for the Flames, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Joey MacDonald gave up all four goals on 27 shots in the loss.
Calgary trailed by two entering the third period, but made it a one-goal game 3:42 in when the team worked a give-and-go and Hudler finished it off for his ninth goal of the year.
Minnesota got it back exactly 11 seconds later as Bouchard let fly with a wrister from the left wing that sailed past MacDonald for a 3-1 lead.
Just over a minute later, the Wild gave themselves some room as Matt Cullen's pass from the right corner to the slot was one-timed home by Pominville for his second of the game.
Hanowski's first career goal, in his first game, came at the 11:19 mark as he jammed home a rebound in front, and the Flames made it a 4-3 contest with 39.5 seconds left on Baertschi's second goal of the season.
"We have plenty of young players and what's the sense of calling them up if we're going to keep them on the bench and not put them in key situations," said Calgary head coach Bob Hartley. "We want to invest in our young players."
The team won the mid-ice faceoff and got MacDonald out of the net for an extra attacker, but couldn't get any pressure in the Minnesota end before time expired.
Koivu gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead just 2:17 into the game and Pominville made it a 2-0 game with 8:47 to play in the second when he tucked home a rebound from the right side.
