Iginla stays hot as Flames cruise past Coyotes
Dec 17, 2006 - 7:37 AM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- Captain Jarome Iginla was not about to let his Calgary Flames teammates lose another road game.Iginla scored twice and added two assists as the Flames posted a 6-3 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes, who have lost four of five.
Daymond Langkow notched a goal and three assists and Tony Amonte scored a tally and set up two others for Calgary, which snapped a five-game road losing streak.
Iginla started the scoring when defenseman Dion Phaneuf wristed a shot from the high slot that bounced off goaltender Mikael Tellqvist and back to Iginla, who slapped it into the net with 1:29 left in the first period.
"This was a really big game for us because we still have five on the road," Iginla said. "Tonight was tough because they came back and they pushed us."
Alex Tanguay gave Calgary a 2-0 lead early in the second session, but Phoenix tied the game with 12 minutes left in the period. Defenseman Derek Morris wristed a shot from the point which was stopped by netminder Miikka Kiprusoff, but Mike Comrie was there to tap in the rebound.
Two minutes later, the Flames regained the lead on the power play. Daymond Langkow deflected Tony Amonte's shot past Tellqvist, who had lost his stick in a scramble seconds earlier.
Iginla put Calgary back up by two with 7:12 left in the period when, with a man advantage, he slapped the puck past an outstretched Tellqvist.
"To get those goals right after they scored and took back the momentum was really big because our power play had been struggling," Iginla said. "We felt like we had some chances and we felt like we have been moving but they haven't gone in and tonight was that other day when they did go in."
Iginla, who has recorded 17 points in his last eight games, has taken great pleasure in facing the Coyotes. In his last 11 meetings with Phoenix, the two-time Maurice Richard Trophy winner has registered 14 goals and five assists.
"Jarome was the best player on the ice. With the effort he gives each and every game and with that much skill, you are going to have benefits," Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky said. "He was the difference in the hockey game."
Ladislav Nagy and defenseman Travis Roche also tallied for the Coyotes, who have lost four straight matchups with the Flames.
"We need some production offensively from some more guys," Gretzky said. "I hate to say this but when our top guys have only six or seven goals we are not going to win a lot of hockey games. We need our key guys to produce more offensively, in power-play situations and in key moments."
Kiprusoff stopped 32 shots for Calgary, while Tellqvist made 25 saves for Phoenix.
