Perry snaps tie as Ducks win for eight time in 10 games

Dec 27, 2006 - 7:40 AM
SAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Just the smallest piece of Corey Perry's streak was all that mattered for the Anaheim Ducks.

Perry broke a third-period tie and Dustin Penner scored his 15th goal for the Ducks, who won for the eighth time in 10 contests with a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

Playing the second contest of a five-game road trip, Anaheim raised its road mark to 13-3-2 with its league-leading 28th win and 62nd point, 12 more than second-place San Jose in the Pacific Division.

"When you have a group of guys that put forth the effort like they did tonight and they get results, it wasn't pretty, but we are not going to critique a win," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "Our work effort has been at the forefront of our success. It's a tribute to our players commitment."

Perry scored his 12th goal of the campaign - his sixth tally in seven games - when he tipped Samuel Pahlsson's blast from the left point past goaltender Evgeni Nabokov with 9:40 to play.

After Chris Kunitz gave the Ducks a 2-1 lead early in the second period, Penner put Anaheim in front with 6:55 remaining in the session on a wraparound off a rebound of a shot by Andy McDonald.

"We worked hard and when you do that, good things happen," Anaheim defenseman Scott Niedermayer said. "They had their opportunities, but we worked hard and tonight we got our way."

However, Steve Bernier tied the score, 3-3, with 3:36 left in the second period with a quick shot in front after Joe Pavelski's setup pass. Ducks netminder Jean-Sebastien Giguere suffered a leg injury on the play and left the game.

"I think we stepped up a notch in the third, which means we got great leadership," Giguere said. "Guys are ready to step in a play a lot of minutes and we are able to play with a lot of adversity."

Making his second career appearance, backup Michael Wall made four saves in the third period for Anaheim, which stopped San Jose on three power-play chances down the stretch.

"We kept it simple," Ducks blue-liner Chris Pronger said. "We did not try to get outside ourselves. We had a goalie who had not played a while in net. It was a situation we needed to bear down. We got a big goal and that gave us a lot of life on the bench."

Patrick Marleau netted his 16th tally, defenseman Christian Ehrhoff added his seventh and Nabokov stopped 26 shots for the Sharks, who have dropped two of three meetings with the Ducks this season.

"The puck has to be stopped, but sometimes there is just nothing you can do," Nabokov said. "You react on a play and I reacted and it wasn't there. If I were a little sharper, I think the outcome of the game would be a little different."

"You have to give them credit," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "They really buckled down and defended really well. They blocked a lot of shots. We have to find a way to get shots through or at least to the side of the net. We had about 10 shots blocked in a row in the third period."
