Daniel Sedin, Ohlund lead Canucks in rout over Oilers

Dec 31, 2006 - 8:25 AM EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- Daniel Sedin and defenseman Mattias Ohlund made sure the Vancouver Canucks kept rolling and the Edmonton Oilers continued struggling.

Sedin had two goals and an assist and Ohlund tallied twice as the Canucks posted a 6-2 victory over the Oilers.

The win was Vancouver's third straight, while the setback dropped the defending Western Conference champions to 2-7-0 in their last nine.

"I think once again our players knew the importance of this game, got ready to play and came out with a lot of urgency and weren't going to back down," Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said. "Scoring that first goal and the power play clicking the way it did was huge. We did the same to them here that they did to us a couple of weeks back in our building. It was a big two points for us.

"Our divisional record wasn't what it needs to be and our road record isn't what it needs to be, and guys understood that and got ready to play and played well."

Sedin's first goal came at 2:02 of the second period, when he tipped defenseman Kevin Bieksa's shot out of mid-air and past goaltender Jussi Markkanen for a 2-0 lead. He tallied again with 3:13 to go in the third, picking up a loose puck and stuffing it by Markkanen for a 6-2 bulge.

"I think we took advantage of their mistakes and did a good job of going to the net hard," said Sedin, who had a goal and an assist in a 6-5 win over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday. "It's not common that we score six, but it's good to see. Our power play has been really good lately, and it has to be for us to win."

Ohlund netted his second of the game with just under five minutes remaining. After exiting the penalty box, he took a feed from Brendan Morrison, sped in on a breakaway and beat Markkanen with a backhander for a 5-2 advantage.

"It's always nice to be a part of the offense but it was huge for us and nice for us to get the win," Ohlund said. "We've been very inconsistent team and hopefully this stretch will show us how we need to play, and the last three games have been huge for us."

Roberto Luongo made 35 saves for the Canucks, who went 2-for-5 on the power play. Edmonton was 0-for-10 with the extra skater.

"We've been playing really well, getting some bonuses as far as goals, and it helps out in the results of the game," Luongo said. "I think our starts in the last three games have been good, we haven't allowed any goals and we've been really disciplined. That helps when you have a good first period just to get the legs going, and get more confidence on your side."
