Brodeur, Gionta lead Devils past Canadiens

Jan 7, 2007 - 10:57 PM MONTREAL (Ticker) -- Martin Brodeur and Brian Gionta kept the New Jersey Devils on their hot streak.

Brodeur stopped all 28 shots for his seventh shutout of the season and Gionta scored two goals as the Devils defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 3-0, to earn their sixth win in seven games.

Michael Rupp scored the deciding goal off a rebound to the left side of an open net past an out-of-position goaltender Cristobal Huet 2:21 into the opening period.

Gionta, who scored two goals against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, pushed the lead to 2-0 with his 18th goal of the season on a backhand past the diving Huet just 42 seconds before the first intermission.

The 5-7 Gionta completed the scoring as he tallied on the power play by one-timing the puck at the low right post past Huet.

A two-time Vezina trophy winner, Brodeur was never seriously tested throughout the session and picked up his 87th career shutout.

Scott Gomez and Brian Rafalski each had two assists for the Devils, who were 1-for-6 on the power play.

Huet made 34 saves for the struggling Canadiens, who have lost their last three contests.
