Coyotes extend winning streak to seven
Jan 10, 2007 - 5:31 AM DALLAS (Ticker) -- Shane Doan kept the Phoenix Coyotes howling along.Doan scored twice as the surging Coyotes extended their winning streak to seven games with a 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars.
Defenseman Ed Jovanovski added a goal and an assist for the Coyotes (20-20-2), whose winning streak is their longest since an eight-game run from November 16-December 2, 1999.
"We have a ways to go still," Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky said. "We dug ourselves a pretty good hole, but I'm proud of the way our guys got back in the race."
The Coyotes also completed a 5-0 road trip, winning for the sixth straight time away from home.
"It was a big road trip, we did what we needed," Doan said. "We needed this streak to get to .500. That's how deep we were buried. We're still a long ways from where we need to be."
Doan scored his 12th goal of the season, a power-play tally from the slot with 8:18 remaining in the second period to give the Coyotes a 3-1 lead. He completed his third multi-goal game with an empty-net tally with 51 seconds to play.
Jovanovski's power-play goal at 9:11 of the middle session had snapped a 1-1 tie. It was his ninth tally of the season.
Travis Roche and Owen Nolan also scored and Ladislav Nagy registered a pair of assists for the Coyotes, who went 2-for-5 on the power play.
Phoenix received a strong performance in goal from Mikael Tellqvist, who made 29 saves en route to his third straight win.
"We are going to try and ride this wave as long as possible," Tellqvist said. "It is a great atmosphere in this room right now."
Niklas Hagman scored midway through the first period and Jere Lehtinen tallied on a 5-on-3 power play 42 seconds into the third for Dallas, which lost for the fourth time in five games.
"You've got to give them credit," said Hagman, who has three goals in his last five games and eight on the season. "They played a good game tonight, they had a stretch where they've played well. Now they're getting their bounces. We knew that before the game and we just should have played better."
Dallas was returning home following a three-game road trip through Western Canada.
"For whatever reason, we had very little emotional engagement in the game," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "Was there fatigue involved? Probably. Still, you've got to muster up something."
