Norrena, Foote help end Red Wings' winning streak

Jan 20, 2007 - 2:52 AM COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- The Columbus Blue Jackets know the importance of scoring the first goal of a game. Adam Foote proved netting the last also is quite significant.

Foote scored a power-play goal late in the third period and added an assist and Fredrik Norrena made 41 saves as the Blue Jackets posted an impressive 3-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

Detroit entered with the NHL's second-best record (22-3-1) when scoring first, but Columbus netted the initial goal in this one as Dan Fritsche tallied late in the opening period. Thanks to Foote, the Blue Jackets went on to improve to 13-1-4 when taking a 1-0 lead.

After recording an assist on Alexander Svitov's man-advantage goal in the second period that gave Columbus a 2-0 bulge, Foote was credited with a fortunate tally with 2:05 remaining in the third to seal the victory. From the right point, Foote unleashed a slap shot that was stopped by goaltender Dominik Hasek.

However, the rebound caromed off defenseman Chris Chelios and into the net, giving Foote his third goal of the season.

Norrena withstood a furious comeback attempt by the Red Wings, turning aside 20 shots in the third period alone. The 41 saves fell one short of his career high, set in a shutout against Colorado on December 5.

David Vyborny notched his team-leading 30th assist for Columbus, which evened its home record at 10-10-3.

Johan Franzen scored for the Red Wings, who had their five-game winning streak halted.
