Zetterberg completes Red Wings' comeback over Islanders

Jan 31, 2007 - 4:58 AM
UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- Henrik Zetterberg helped wake up the Detroit Red Wings. By the end of the night, he was the life of the party.

Zetterberg assisted on the first Detroit goal by Niklas Kronvall early in the third period and scored the game-winner in overtime to lead the Red Wings to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the New York Islanders.

The Red Wings were outplayed for two periods but stormed back in the third on goals by Kronvall, Daniel Cleary and Tomas Holmstrom, setting the stage for Zetterberg.

"We just started to battle back," Zetterberg said. "We just started to put the puck on net."

The hard-charging Zetterberg did just that in the extra session after taking a pass from Nicklas Lidstrom, who skated around a defender before finding the Swedish left wing in the left circle. Zetterberg wristed a shot past the glove of out-of-position goaltender Rick DiPietro at 2:57 of the overtime session.

"He got the puck to me," Zetterberg said of Lidstrom. "It was an open net."

Lidstrom assisted on the final three goals for the Red Wings, who were making their first trip to Nassau Coliseum since December 17, 2002.

Goaltender Dominik Hasek, who celebrated his 42nd birthday on Monday, needed to stop just 16 shots to defeat the Islanders for the seventh straight time. Most of his troubles came early when Mike Sillinger put home a rebound just 22 seconds into the game and Shawn Bates and Jason Blake scored less than four minutes apart midway through the second.

"After that, we didn't make any turnovers and we played smart," Hasek said. "Early on, we were making turnovers and I didn't make any saves."

The Red Wings had their chances, failing to convert on their first five power plays before Kornvall scored on a wrist shot from near the left circle at 3:24 of the third.

"Once we got that first goal, we felt a whole lot better," Lidstrom said. "We weren't happy with the way we had played."

Detroit made it a one-goal game when Cleary converted off a pass across the crease from Lidstrom. Holmstrom was credited with the tying goal on the power play midway through the third when he tipped in a slap shot by Lidstrom from the top of the left circle.

"We played as good as we could in the first two periods and as bad as we could in the third," Islanders coach Ted Nolan said. "We allowed them to do what they do best - skate and move the puck."

New York managed just five shots in the third period and had none in the overtime session.

"I think we lost our focus," Islanders captain Alexei Yashin said.

New York's performance was in sharp contrast to its play in the first two periods and in a comeback win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.

"I don't know what happened," DiPietro said. "We're better than we showed in the third. That's a lost point that we hope doesn't cost us down the road."

The Islanders lost for just the second time this season when leading after two periods (19-1-1).
