Sedin brothers too much for Oilers

Feb 7, 2007 - 8:51 AM
EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- Daniel and Henrik Sedin provided all the scoring the Vancouver Canucks needed to maintain their dominance of the Edmonton Oilers.

Daniel Sedin recorded his first hat trick and Henrik added four assists as the Canucks posted a 5-2 victory over the Oilers.

The Canucks have won four straight over the Oilers and are now 4-2-1 against their Northwest Division foe so far this season.

Daniel Sedin scored late in the first period to tie the game, 1-1. He added a tally to make it 4-2 eight minutes into the third period and he capped the hat trick with an empty-net goal with 56 seconds to play.

"It was a big game, so it was nice to get some goals and contribute," Daniel Sedin said. "When the puck goes your way like that, it makes for a fun night."

Roberto Luongo made 28 saves for Vancouver, which improved to 13-2-3 in its last 18 contests overall.

"It's been great to win some games and all through January we have really been rolling," Henrik Sedin said. "So it's good for the team not just the two of us."

Shawn Horcoff and Zack Stortini each scored goals for Edmonton. Stortini tied the game 2-2 midway through the second period, banging in a rebound off a shot by Petr Sykora for his first NHL goal.

"It's a big game and the season is running out, so yeah, it's a disappointment for us," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said.

Markus Naslund and Taylor Pyatt scored goals for Vancouver, which has recorded at least a point in nine of its last 10 games.

Two of Vancouver's goals came on a pair of full two-minute 5-on-3 power-play opportunities. Edmonton's Raffi Torres took the second penalty both times.

"It was stupid. We lost the game because of my penalties and I need to be smarter than that," Torres said. "It cost us the game and I need to be better than that."
