Zetterberg registers four points to lift Red Wings

Feb 12, 2007 - 2:59 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Henrik Zetterberg remained red-hot at the expense of the Calgary Flames.

Zetterberg scored twice and set up two other tallies as the Detroit Red Wings extended their home winning streak to 12 games with a 7-4 victory over the Flames.

In a dominating performance in which they held a 50-20 advantage in shots, the Red Wings had six players with multiple points.

Zetterberg led the way for the Red Wings as he opened the scoring at 8:43 of the first period. His power-play tally less than four minutes into the second session gave the Red Wings a 4-0 cushion.

"Today the biggest thing was to have a good start and we had that today," Zetterberg said. "Hopefully we can keep doing that."

Zetterberg also assisted on a first-period goal by defenseman Mathieu Schneider and a second-period tally by Tomas Holmstrom.

"He's obviously a top-end player in the league," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "And like the other top players, he's got a little extra, and he has a good work ethic."

In his last seven games, Zetterberg has registered seven goals and nine assists. The Swede leads the Red Wings with 26 tallies.

Despite building a 6-1 lead after two periods, the Red Wings let the Flames back in the game thanks to the ineffective play of rookie goaltender Joey MacDonald, who entered with an 0-4-1 record in his career.

MacDonald surrendered three goals in under a four-minute span of the third period, allowing the Flames to pull within 6-4 with 2:40 remaining. The 27-year-old MacDonald finished with 16 saves.

But Johan Franzen sealed things for the Red Wings with his seventh goal of the season with 1:23 remaining.

"You don't like them to get the goals at the end, you'd like to finish it off, but that's the way it happened," Babcock said.

Holmstrom, Schneider and Jason Williams all had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who have won six of their last seven games overall.

The Red Wings have not lost at home since a 3-2 setback against Ottawa on December 12.

It was an ineffective night for Flames All-Star goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff, who was pulled with 6:06 left in the first period after allowing three goals on 14 shots.

"We didn't come out and compete the way we wanted to," said Flames goaltender Jamie McLennan, who stopped 32-of-36 shots after replacing Kipruosoff. "We left Miikka high and dry there. It's a situation where we knew what Detroit was all about and they executed and did the job. They outplayed us for the full 60 minutes. We didn't do what we set out to do and they did."

Defenseman Roman Hamrlik had a goal and an assist for Calgary, which fell to 0-2-2 in its last four games.

"We got to right this ship and turn it around and get going," Flames center Craig Conroy said. "We don't have time to sit back."
