Salo's overtime goal lifts Canucks over Wild

Feb 15, 2007 - 9:13 AM
ST. PAUL, Minnesota (Ticker) -- Vancouver's Sami Salo picked a great time to match his career high in goals.

Salo scored his 10th goal this season with 40 seconds left in overtime to lift the Canucks to a 3-2 overtime win over the Minnesota Wild.

The defenseman notched his fifth game-winner of the season, extending his career high total in that category.

"It is huge," Salo said of the win. "Lately, especially this year, we have struggled against them here. The last three before this and last season, we always seem to struggle against the Wild, especially here. So the (extra) point is huge."

"There were a lot of chances on both sides, and a lot of shots," Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire said. "We get a goal, they get a goal. Good goaltending on both sides. Overall, I thought the forwards played well, they got chances. I thought our defense could have been better."

After goaltender Roberto Luongo made a save despite being screened, Salo skated in on a 2-on-1 break with Matt Cooke. The blue-liner took a pass from Cooke in the slot and deked netminder Niklas Backstrom before slipping a backhand pass him.

"Both teams wanted the win and their defensemen had joined the rush," Salo said. "We just happened to get them on a bad break. There "D" was jumping in and we caught the puck, and had a chance for a 2-on-1. I just waited for him (Cooke) to pass me the puck, and you know, I just tried to make a move and it happened to go in."

"It was a 2-on-1 and Salo made a good move," Backstrom said. "He had a lot of speed so he came across and got the puck, I had my pad there, and he got it over my pad. So it was a good move for him."

Salo, who has 10 goals in 47 games this season, matched his career high set in 59 contests last season.

Markus Naslund and Daniel Sedin scored for Vancouver, which improved to 5-2-1 in its last eight games.

Naslund gave the Canucks a 1-0 lead at 9:49 of the first period on the power play. He redirected Brendan Morrison's pass past Backstrom for his 19th goal of the season. The Vancouver captain has seven goals and 11 assists in his last 15 games.

Luongo made 30 saves in winning on the road for the seventh time in his last eight games.

"It (the victory) is huge," Luongo said. "Every point we can get in the standings right now is huge, especially with our division so tight. It is always nice to get the win."

"He (Luongo) was huge at the right times," Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said. "He gave us a chance to win, just like their goaltender. Both goaltenders played well, and I thought both teams played well. You need a winner, and it was better off to be us tonight."

Marian Gaborik and Pavol Demitra had a goal and an assist each for the Wild, who fell to 5-2-0 in their last seven games.

Demitra tied the game, 1-1, at 5:16 of the second period when he poked a rebound past Luongo. The right wing extended his points streak to seven games. He has five goals and seven assists in that span.

After Sedin gave Vancouver a 2-1 advantage at 5:35, Gaborik tied the game at 11:43 when he took a pass from Demitra on a 2-on-1 and beat Luongo. Backstrom, who recorded 31 saves, is 1-2-0 against the Canucks this season despite allowing just five goals.

"You never know, after 82 games, this point can be pretty big," Backstrom said. "You never know. Every point is really important. It is going to be a tough weekend, but we should be ready for that. You can't think too much about this game anymore."

Minnesota plays at Nashville on Saturday and at St. Louis on Sunday.
