Flames get much-needed win over Red Wings

Mar 21, 2007 - 5:37 AM CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Daymond Langkow and Kristian Huselius kept the Calgary Flames from being a part of Detroit Red Wings history.

Langkow and Huselius each scored a goal and the Flames kept the Red Wings from recording yet another 100-point season with a 2-1 victory.

Langkow scored a power-play goal 1:47 into the first period for Calgary (38-25-10), which moved six points ahead of the idle Colorado Avalanche (37-29-6) for the eighth spot in the Western Conference.

"It was a good boost for us, but we have to play this way every night," Langkow said. "Special teams win games and that was the case tonight."

Detroit was looking to become just the second team in NHL history to record seven straight 100-point seasons. Montreal topped 100 points eight seasons in a row between 1975-1982 but Detroit will have to wait at least one more game thanks to Langkow, Huselius and goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff.

Pavel Datsyuk scored a goal 1:27 into the second period to extend his points streak to a career-high 11 games and tie the game 1-1. Huselius scored 16 minutes later on the power play and the Flames did all they could to hold onto the lead.

Huselius scored on the power play after a scramble in front that left Detroit goaltender Dominik Hasek flat on his back.

Dion Phaneuf took a slap shot with Jarome Iginla trying to screen Hasek in front of the net. There was incidental contact at the most but Hasek flopped to the ice trying to draw a penalty to no avail.

Alex Tanguay got the rebound of Phaneuf's shot and sent a pass across the slot to Huselius, who fired the puck over a prone Hasek.

"It wasn't interference at all," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "Our goalie tried to draw the penalty and he dove and they shot it in the net.

Hasek disagreed with his coach's assessment.

"I was bumped by an elbow but I didn't see who it was," Hasek said. "I couldn't see the puck when the shot was made."

Kiprusoff made 30 saves, including 10 in the third period when the Flames managed only two shots.

"It was a pretty good defensive effort (in the third period). Most of them were from the outside," Kiprusoff said. "I thought we played well, we didn't give them too much when they were trying to tie the game. I thought it was a good defensive effort from all the players."

Hasek made 21 saves for the Red Wings (45-19-9), who remain a point behind idle Nashville (47-20-6) for the top spot in the Western Conference and the Central Division.

Detroit is now 2-2 against Calgary this season and has scored 12 goals in the four contests.
