Lecavalier, Boyle knock Hurricanes out of playoff race

Apr 4, 2007 - 3:27 AM
TAMPA, Florida (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Lightning moved one step closer to a playoff berth. The Carolina Hurricanes took two steps back.

Vincent Lecavalier tied the game in the third period and Dan Boyle drove home the winner as the Lightning took down their Southeast Division rival Hurricanes, 3-2.

Lecavalier tied the game 80 seconds into the third period with a wrist shot from 21 feet past Carolina goaltender Cam Ward. Boyle followed less than two minutes later with an unassisted slapshot over the left shoulder of Ward for his 20th goal of the season which provided the winning margin.

It's pretty special," Boyle said. "Not too many guys get to that level. It's not 50 for a forward but it certainly is very special for a defenseman to get 20 goals.

I don't really care about the numbers," Tampa Bay coach John Tortorella said. "I hope he (Boyle) gets 25 (goals). As long as he's scoring. He's probably one of the most underrated players in the league. The team does not go without Dan Boyle.

Carolina jumped to a 2-0 lead with goals by Ray Whitney and Rod Brind'Amour. Eric Cole tallied two assists for the Hurricanes, who were officially eliminated from playoff contention just a year removed from their Stanley Cup victory.

Everything has gone wrong the last week," Carolina defenseman Mike Commodore said. "Everything was going good and then with the snap of the fingers and it's gone. It's just like the game tonight everything was going pretty well but then we lose 3-2. It's tough.

Eric Perrin scored the first goal for Tampa Bay, which moved within one point of idle Atlanta (41-27-11) for first place in the Southeast Division and the third seed in the East.

We've had it all year long," Tortorella said. "I think that's 10 wins down and that's 10 when we're tied (after the second period). Even up until the third period I thought we were playing a good hockey game even when we were down 2-0 and we just stayed with it.

"Vinny scores a goal and Danny takes it on his own and scores a goal. As I've said, the team has some fight in it. From face-off to the end of the game I thought we played solid. And the good thing about it is that we didn't get frustrated we just kept going and tried to find a way.

Lightning netminder Johan Holmqvist stopped 23 shots to earn his third straight win.

He (Holmqvist) played solid," Boyle said. "He made the saves when he needed to. He struggled for a little while, but the last three games he's played very confident and he kept us in the game and he deserved the win tonight.
