Roenick, Doan lead Coyotes past slumping Kings

Apr 6, 2007 - 8:30 AM GLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Coyotes put an end to one streak while keeping another going.

Jeremy Roenick and Shane Doan scored a goal as the Coyotes snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the reeling Los Angeles Kings.

Roenick's first-period tally moved him into third all-time among American-born players with 495 goals - his 10th this season. Phoenix had a season-high 20 shots in the opening period.

"It is nice to play and contribute," Roenick said. "It has been a good couple of weeks for me. I don't know if it will be the last couple. I like to think that I am trying to play like they are."

"I don't know, maybe the weather is warmer," Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky said about Roenick's improved play. "(Roenick) looks fresh out there and he is playing with Owen (Nolan) and Shane so I am sure he is liking that. It is near the end of the year so I am sure he wants to finish the season off well."

Phoenix goaltender Curtis Joseph had 19 saves to close within two wins of Terry Sawchuk for fourth on the all-time career list at 445.

"We were ready to play and we played excellent," Joseph said. "There was lot of offense on our part in the first, I had to face only five shots. If you get 20 shots on goal in the first period that's a positive sign."

Doan's 199 career goal - 27th this season - helped the Coyotes push the lead to 3-1 in the second period past former Phoenix netminder Sean Burke.

"It is always great to come back here," said Burke, who played for the Coyotes between 1999-2004. "I get to spend the night and home and se my family. I have great memories here."

Michael Cammalleri scored a goal in the final stanza and Burke stopped 35 shots for Los Angeles, which has dropped a season-worst seven straight games.

"They definitely had the better start," Cammalleri said. "We don't take much solace in the fact that we came back. We have done that a lot this season. We have had lots of chances to win those games. It would be nice to win some of those."
