Ducks cap regular season with win over Blue Jackets

Apr 8, 2007 - 4:07 AM
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- The Anaheim Ducks did not need the win, but they certainly will take it.

Teemu Selanne scored twice and Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and two assists as the Ducks posted a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets in the regular-season finale for both teams.

By virtue of the Vancouver Canucks' overtime win over the San Jose Sharks earlier Saturday, the Ducks (48-20-14) clinched the first Pacific Division title in franchise history and secured second place in the Western Conference.

"I was peeking at the scoreboard every 10 seconds during warmup," Selanne said. "(The San Jose game) was still 3-2, and then it was 3-3 and I was like 'God, unbelievable.' Then I was checking it and it turned 4-3 and I was excited."

Anaheim, which finished the regular season with a franchise-best 110 points, will face the Minnesota Wild in the conference quarterfinals. The teams were unlikely opponents in the 2003 conference finals, a series in which Ducks goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere allowed just one goal on 123 shots en route to a four-game sweep.

"Now we have qualified for the playoffs and we meet an opponent that is having an equal amount of success or close to it in Minnesota," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "They added some personnel over the summer and their team is playing at the top of their game. We are in for a dogfight against Minnesota."

Selanne said the series with Minnesota will be "a fun time."

"We know what kind of team we are playing against, a defensive-minded team. We have to match that and we have to find a way to score some goals," he said. "It's almost funny that we played 82 games just to see what seed we were going to get and now the real games start. This team is ready."

Rick Nash gave the Blue Jackets the early lead with his 27th goal of the season 3 1/2 minutes into the first period. However, tallies by Selanne and Dustin Penner in the latter half of the session put Anaheim ahead to stay.

Selanne scored his 48th goal of the season on the power play at 7:24 of the second, and the Ducks lead swelled to 4-1 when Getzlaf tallied with just 28 seconds to play in the period.

"If someone would have told me before the season I would have that many goals, I wouldn't have believed it. I don't expect that," said Selanne, who finished with his highest goals total since scoring 52 in 1997-98.

After allowing four goals on 19 shots, Columbus netminder Fredrik Norrena was replaced by Tomas Popperle at the start of the third. The move appeared to spark the Blue Jackets, as Gilbert Brule and Jason Chimera scored just over four minutes apart midway through the period to cut the deficit to one goal.

However, Ilya Bryzgalov shut the door thereafter and finished with 42 saves, including 16 in each of the final two sessions.

Fredrik Modin had two assists for Columbus (33-42-7), which has yet to qualify for the playoffs since entering the NHL in 2000.

"Its going to be a tough summer," Nash said. "We have to stay in shape. We have to start in September. In past years, we've been building when December and January comes around. Next year, it has to be different."
