Red Wings even series with Blackhawks
May 19, 2013 - 2:50 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Brendan Smith netted the game-winning goal late in the second period, part of a four-goal burst which lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks to even this Western Conference semifinal at one game apiece.Damien Brunner, Johan Franzen and Valtteri Filppula also lit the lamp for the Red Wings, who recovered nicely following Wednesday's series-opening 4-1 loss.
Henrik Zetterberg posted two assists and Jimmy Howard stopped 19 shots for the win.
"Now we're freshened up a bit. This series is on," noted Wings head coach Mike Babcock.
Patrick Kane registered the lone goal and Corey Crawford made 26 saves for the Blackhawks, who saw their eight-game win streak against Detroit ended.
Game 3 shifts to Joe Louis Arena on Monday.
Detroit evened the score at the 2:40 mark of the second, as Brunner's mid-air tip of a Jakub Kindl point shot knuckled past Crawford, then took the lead with 3:53 remaining as Smith came in from his point position to one-time a Zetterberg feed home.
"He creates a lot of stuff. Sometimes for both teams," Zetterberg quipped about his teammate and goal scorer.
Franzen's short-side goal off a break up the right wing at 7:19 of the third period gave the Red Wings a 3-1 advantage, and Filppula made it a three-goal spread for the visitors with a slick backhander from the slot inside of eight minutes remaining.
"We know going into their building it's going to be even more difficult than it was today. We'll turn the page," said Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews about heading to Detroit to continue the series.
Crawford turned away a Cory Emmerton breakaway chance at the tail end of a Chicago power play after the midway point of the first period, and the hosts later cranked up their offensive machinery.
Kane finished off a three-way passing play between himself, Patrick Sharp and Michal Handzus, ripping a one-timer home from the right side with 5:55 to play.
"Across the board, we should all assume some responsibility. We have to be way better than that," said Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville when asked if he placed any blame on Crawford.

1. I TYPED UP THE WRONG THING. I meant the reverse of what I said. I'm not trying to pull a Obama here after Bengazi (pardon all you left-wingers), but I was honestly not thinking. I typed in the exact opposite of what I was thinking. So there. The Wings are no match for the Hawks. Better now? :(
