Silfverberg's shootout tally boosts Ducks over Coyotes
Oct 19, 2013 - 5:34 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jakob Silfverberg scored the winner in the sixth round of the shootout as the Anaheim Ducks took a 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Friday. In the sixth round, Silfverberg buried a wrister past Mike Smith and Jonas Hiller preserved the win with a stop on Shane Doan.
Teemu Selanne and Nick Bonino both scored for the Ducks, who have won six straight. Hiller made 30 stops.
"I thought it was a good hockey game," said Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau. "It's two teams that have played against each other for a while. We know how tough they are, and they know how tough we are. We got a lucky goal and continued to fight. I thought we had a lot of really good chances."
Antoine Vermette and Rostislav Klesla each scored for the Coyotes, who have dropped their past two. Smith turned aside 37 shots.
"I thought we played a solid road game. Both teams had a few chances but we hung around the game and gave ourselves a chance to win and that is what you want to do," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett. "Anaheim has been playing very well and we wanted to come in and play a solid game. For the most part, we did that."
The only goal of the first period went to Anaheim, as a turnover at the left point saw Mathieu Perreault sneak the puck down front and Selanne finish off the play with a shot between the pads of Smith at 6:38.
Phoenix tied the game moments after a power play expired as the team kept the puck in the zone with Keith Yandle firing a pass from the slot to the low left side where Vermette shot it home.
Phoenix took a 2-1 lead at 7:54 of the third period as Klesla's slap shot from the left point was re-directed by the stick of a Duck and it went past Hiller.
Anaheim, though, tied the game with 2:02 to play as Bonino kept in a clear at the right point and snuck a shot past a screened Smith for his third goal of the year.
