Andersen outduels Anderson as Ducks down Sens

Oct 26, 2013 - 2:59 AM Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Frederik Andersen stopped 26-of-27 shots in his first career start and Ryan Getzlaf notched a goal and an assist, as the Anaheim Ducks edged the Ottawa Senators, 2-1, on Friday at Canadian Tire Centre.

The 24-year-old Andersen, who agreed to a two-year contract with the Ducks prior to the game, appeared in just one other game this season when he came on in relief of starter Jonas Hiller and turned away all 24 shots he faced in an eventual 6-3 win over Dallas on Oct. 20.

Patrick Maroon potted Anaheim's other goal and Cory Perry finished with a pair of helpers for the Ducks, who had dropped their first two games on their current eight-game road trip.

"This was the effort that I'm accustomed to seeing, when everyone is doing the right things," Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau said.

Mike Zibanejad scored the lone Ottawa goal, while Craig Anderson allowed both goals on 28 shots for the Senators, who had won three of their last four games since an Oct. 13 loss in Anaheim that saw the Ducks rack up 56 shots on goal.

Anaheim struck first under eight minutes in thanks to some nifty passing, as Getzlaf slid a backhand feed from the left point to below the goal line, where Perry one-touched the disc to the left circle for a cutting Maroon.

After controlling the disc, Maroon threw a shot on net that deflected off the stick of Ottawa's Marc Methot and snuck past Anderson for a 1-0 lead at 7:35.

Getzlaf doubled the Ducks' lead just over 10 minutes later when he took advantage of an Anderson turnover and tickled the twine for a 2-0 cushion at 17:38.

The Senators sliced the margin in half on the power play near the midpoint of the second after Saku Koivu went off for slashing at 7:19.

With Ottawa working in the offensive zone, Zibanejad, who drew the penalty against Koivu, rifled a one-timer from just above the left circle that beat Andersen to the short-side to make it 2-1 at 9:04.

Ottawa failed to capitalize on a pair of power plays in the third, as Andersen turned away all 12 shots he faced in the frame to secure the victory for the Ducks.

"They're real fast, they're real quick, they didn't give us a lot of time and space to do anything," Senators head coach Paul MacLean said of the Ducks. "I thought for the most part, they were better than we were."

Maroon scored for the second straight game and has at least one point in each of his last four games ... Anaheim's Mathieu Perreault suffered an upper-body injury in the second period and did not return ... Anaheim has won four straight and seven of the last eight meetings with Ottawa ...
