Devils down Ducks in OT on own goal

Nov 21, 2013 - 6:27 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Travis Zajac was credited with the game- winner 1:58 into overtime after the Ducks put the puck in their own net, as the New Jersey Devils handed Anaheim its first home loss of the season with a 4-3 decision on Wednesday at Honda Center.

On the deciding goal, the Devils charged down the ice on a counter-attack, with Dainius Zubrus feathering the puck to the front of the net for a cutting Zajac, who kicked the disc on net with his skate.

Jonas Hiller turned the deflection aside and defenseman Ben Lovejoy tried to clear the disc from in front of his net, but the puck ricocheted off teammate Corey Perry's skate and into the back of the net to end the game.

"They came back on an odd-man rush, Jonas [Hiller] made the save, and I tried to clear it into the corner, but fired it off of Corey [Perry's] shin pad," Lovejoy said of the final play.

Jaromir Jagr lit the lamp with 1:01 left in regulation to force overtime, Eric Gelinas notched a goal and an assist, and Marek Zidlicky also scored once for the Devils, who have won four of their last five games.

Martin Brodeur made 22 saves, including an acrobatic stop on Mathieu Perreault's rebound attempt from the doorstep early in overtime.

Nick Bonino registered a goal and an assist, while Ryan Getzlaf and Matt Beleskey each tallied once for the Ducks, who had won their first eight home games of the season.

Hiller allowed all four goals on 25 shots in defeat.

Getzlaf's 12th goal of the season came on the power play at the 15:40 mark of the second period and staked Anaheim to a 3-2 lead.

Hiller held the Devils at bay from there until late in the contest when Patrik Elias recovered the disc behind the Anaheim net and tried to stuff in a wraparound, but the puck trickled to the front of the net, where Jagr pounded it home to send the game to an extra session.

"We had the puck under control behind the net," Jagr said of his game-tying goal. "I was just waiting in front of the net. Sometimes the puck doesn't come. This time it came and I had an open net."

Early on, Beleskey got the Ducks on the board 11:31 into the tilt with his first of the season, but the Devils answered with a pair of power-play goals 1:26 apart later in the frame to take a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

Zidlicky evened the score with a slapper from the slot at 15:44 and Gelinas followed under 90 seconds later with a one-timer from between the circles.

Anaheim pulled even with a power play marker of its own 2:28 into the second, as Bonino buried a rebound from the low right side to make it 2-2.
