Penner scores twice as Ducks defeat Coyotes
Nov 24, 2013 - 7:03 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Dustin Penner scored a pair of goals and Jonas Hiller made 41 saves in the Anaheim Ducks' 4-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday.Corey Perry and Sami Vatanen added one goal apiece for the Ducks, who have won two straight on the heels of a five-game losing skid.
"Guys were blocking shots and we were putting in a lot of hard work," said Hiller. "That's what we needed tonight to get a bit of a winning streak going and now we have to keep it going."
Shane Doan had one goal and an assist and Mike Ribeiro also lit the lamp for the Coyotes, losers in three of their last four games. Mike Smith allowed all four goals on 22 shots.
"Give them credit because they just out-worked us," said Doan. "We didn't do any of the hard work that you need to do if you want to win in this league."
Penner opened up the scoring with his power-play goal 11:11 into the game. Cam Fowler centered the puck to Penner and he lifted a wrister past Smith for a 1-0 lead.
Ribeiro knotted things up at 1-1 7:27 into the middle session. After the Ducks coughed up the puck in their own zone, Derek Morris fired a shot from the blue line that bounced off Hiller. Ribeiro, though, was there to clean up the miss.
Penner put the Ducks ahead for good with his goal 36 seconds later. Penner skated along the right side on a 2-on-1 break and faked a cross-ice pass before pulling it back and beating Hiller once again.
Perry's 13th goal of the season made it 3-1 with 8:59 remaining in the second. Ryan Getzlaf recovered a loose puck in the neutral zone and dumped it to Perry, who danced around a pair of Phoenix defenders before cutting it back to the middle of the ice and putting it in the back of the net.
Vatanen added a power play goal at the 16:43 mark for a 4-1 edge and Doan tipped in an Oliver Ekman-Larssnon shot in the third period to account for the final margin.
Game Notes
Anaheim was 2-for-4 on the power play ... Penner has six goals this season ... Doan notched his 11th goal of the season ... Phoenix forward Martin Hanzal left the game in the first period with an apparent lower-body injury and did not return.
