Penner, Ducks take down Flames

Nov 30, 2013 - 1:26 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Dustin Penner scored twice as the Anaheim Ducks took a 5-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday.

Andrew Cogliano and Corey Perry posted a goal and an assist, while Sami Vatanen also scored for the Ducks, who have won three of their last four games. Fredrik Andersen stopped 19 shots in the win.

"We want to get some confidence to take into next week because we've got some pretty stiff competition," said Penner. "We're going to need the team feeling as confident as possible."

Ladislav Smid and David Jones scored for the Flames, who have dropped three of their last four. Reto Berra gave up all five goals on 38 shots before being pulled late in the third, with Karri Ramo stopping all four shots he faced in relief.

"I thought we were really flat in the first period," said Smid. "We had a good talk between periods and I thought we came back stronger in the second period, we scored some goals but at the same time we made some mistakes, had some turnovers and it pretty much cost us the game."

Anaheim scored at 12:20 of the first period as Cogliano sent a pass from the low right circle to the top where Vatanen slapped home a shot for his third of the year.

Less than a minute later, it was a 2-0 game when Ben Lovejoy's shot from the high slot was re-directed in by Perry down low for his 14th of the season.

The Ducks made it a 3-0 game at 3:52 of the second on the power play as Ryan Getzlaf faked a slap shot from the high slot, and sent a pass to the left side where Penner re-directed it in.

Smid scored two minutes later to get Calgary on the board, but the Ducks got it back three minutes after that as a rush saw Daniel Winnik send a pass from the left wing to the slot where Cogliano stretched out on the backhand to get the puck before sending it into the net for his seventh of the season.

Jones scored with 7:43 to play in the second period to make it a 4-2 contest.

Penner scored his second of the game with 8:34 left in the contest to cap the scoring.
