Sharks snap Ducks' 10-game winning streak
Dec 30, 2013 - 6:57 AM San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Antti Niemi stopped 30 shots and the San Jose Sharks beat the Ducks, 3-1, to snap Anaheim's franchise-record 10-game winning streak.Brent Burns, Logan Couture and Bracken Kearns lit the lamp for the Sharks, who won their fourth in a row. The 32-year-old Kearns registered his first NHL goal.
This was the start of a home-and-home series with the Ducks set to host Tuesday's contest. Anaheim has yet to lose in regulation at home this season (14-0-2), something the Sharks have done just once (14-1-3) this campaign at SAP Center.
Patrick Maroon scored in the third period for the Ducks, who lost for the first time since Dec. 3 in a shootout against the Los Angeles Kings. The Ducks had their 13-game point streak (11-0-2) broken. That was three shy of the club record (12-0-4), set Oct. 6 - Nov. 9, 2006.
Frederik Andersen made 20 stops for the Ducks, who had won their previous six road games.
Andersen robbed Joe Pavelski of a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle. Pavelski then fed the disc to the front for Burns, who netted his 12th goal of the season only 1:17 into the game.
"I think in the first period, the first five minutes, they came out flying. We knew they were going to do that," Maroon said. "They took it right out of us. They came out hitting and we were flat-footed."
Couture scored his 100th career goal 10:07 into the first. He skated with the puck through center ice, got around Anaheim defenseman Francois Beauchemin in the left circle and from the right side of the net went to the backhand to get the disc over Andersen.
"It's about time. I'm happy to score. I forgot what it felt like," said Couture, who scored for the first time since Dec. 3 at Toronto.
Kearns made it 3-0 at the 9:16 mark of the second. Andrew Desjardins had his wraparound attempt turned away by Andersen, but Kearns got the loose puck in front and slammed it into the net.
Maroon broke the shutout bid at 11:32 of the third on a one-timer from the left circle off a pass from Corey Perry.
