Second-period burst gets Red Wings past Bruins
Oct 14, 2013 - 9:56 PM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Stephen Weiss and Danny Cleary scored in a span of 2:20 midway through the second period, as the Detroit Red Wings squeezed past the Boston Bruins, 3-2, in matinee action from TD Garden.Henrik Zetterberg also provided a goal for the Red Wings, who avenged a 4-1 loss in the Hub on Oct. 5 and earned their fourth win in six games this season.
Jonas Gustavsson made 28 saves for the win in relief of Jimmy Howard, who was a late scratch with a hand injury.
"Maybe 15, 20 minutes before the game started," Gustavsson said when asked how much time he had to prepare. "I was excited to play. It's always fun to go out and have your first game, especially when we have a chance to win."
Loui Eriksson and Milan Lucic tallied for the Bruins, who have dropped two of three after beginning the year with two straight home wins.
"We're really struggling with our finish right now. The chances are there but goals are not coming easy," noted Bruins head coach Claude Julien.
Tuukka Rask stopped 24 shots in defeat.
Down by two, the Bruins were awarded a lengthy two-man advantage early in the third period after Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall and Cleary were whistled for infractions only seven seconds apart. The gap was not closed further despite several quality chances and heavy pressure in their offensive zone.
"We might have to frame that, just because no one will believe it actually happened," said Wings head coach Mike Babcock.
After failing to click on a subsequent 5-on-4 edge, Lucic drew the hosts to 3-2 with 1:20 on the clock thanks to a rising backhander from the slot.
Rask had been sent to the bench for an extra skater seconds before the tally, but unlike the Patriots and Red Sox on Sunday, the Bruins couldn't produce another rallying point.
"There wasn't a full commitment on the backcheck, guys were 'there but didn't react,'" said Julien.
Zetterberg snuck a high shot inside the left post to give the Wings a 1-0 lead with 8:27 left in the first period. Pavel Datsyuk set up the tally with a nifty move to escape a Bruins defender on the right wing before dishing to the goal scorer.
Just under three minutes later, Johnny Boychuk's shot from the boards near the right point was deflected home by Eriksson for a 1-1 tie.
Weiss gave the Wings a 2-1 lead with 8:21 gone in the second period, tapping in a Johan Franzen dish from the right side, and Detroit was up by a 3-1 margin at 10:41 on Cleary's successful shot from between the circles.
