Julien reaches milestone, Bruins beat Jets

Jan 4, 2014 - 9:40 PM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Torey Krug scored twice and added an assist, leading the Boston Bruins to a 4-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at TD Garden.

Daniel Paille also scored for the Bruins in head coach Claude Julien's 500th game behind the Boston bench. Tuukka Rask made 36 saves in the victory, Boston's second straight and fifth in its last seven outings.

"(It's) nice to be here for that long, and like I always say, I hope I can be here for another 500," said Julien.

Dustin Byfuglien scored the lone goal for Winnipeg, which has dropped two in a row after a three-game win streak. Ondrej Pavelec turned aside 25 shots in defeat.

Krug gave Boston a 2-1 lead just over three minutes into the second period with a blast from the left point past a heavily screened Pavelec, then was credited with his second of the game at the 7:18 mark. The rookie's shot from the left circle through a Carl Soderberg screen was deflected in by the stick of Winnipeg defenseman Jacob Trouba.

"He's been a great asset to our hockey club and an asset that we had been looking for a long time," noted Julien about Krug.

Rask was brilliant in the second period, stopping all 19 shots the Jets fired his way. He then made nine more saves in the third and Reilly Smith notched his 15th goal of the season with just over 10 minutes remaining to account for the final margin.

"It was a pretty even period scoring-chance-wise," said Rask about the second period. "We just capitalized on ours. We were forechecking and skating hard. It's good to see."

Byfuglien gave Winnipeg a 1-0 lead midway through the first period with his ninth goal. He fired a shot from the right wing that was stopped and chased down his own rebound behind the net, then circled into the high slot and ripped a wrist shot past Rask's glove.

The Bruins tied with just under six minutes left in the period on Paille's sixth goal. He missed on a wraparound attempt, but the puck slid into the left circle for Krug, who found Paille alone below the right circle for a successful one-timer.

Game Notes

Krug recorded his first career three-point game ... Paille has three goals in his last four games. He returned to the lineup on Dec. 27 after missing seven games with concussion symptoms ... Rask has surrendered one goal or less 16 times this season ... Julien has a record of 284-158-58 with the Bruins ... The Bruins went 0-for-2 on the power play and killed off each of Winnipeg's three chances with the extra skater ... Two fights in a span of only two seconds highlighted the early stages of the first period, as Boston's Zdeno Chara squared off with Winnipeg's Chris Thorburn and Boston's Matt Fraser dropped the gloves with Winnipeg's James Wright moments after the ensuing faceoff ... Boston has won 12 straight at home against the Winnipeg/Atlanta franchise and last tasted defeat in the series at TD Garden on March 31, 2007.

If so, he needs to be sold to the waivers, traded, or just dropped.

He was good last year, and I'm no nay sayer, but the B's need a new goaltender.
