Rask, Bruins blank Sharks

Jan 12, 2014 - 8:02 AM San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tuukka Rask posted 26 saves for his fifth shutout of the season as the Boston Bruins took a hard-fought 1-0 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday.

Carl Soderberg scored the only goal of the game for the Bruins, who finished a three-game California trip with a mark of 1-2-0.

Antti Niemi took the hard-luck loss as he stopped 21 shots for the Sharks, who have alternated losses and wins over their past seven games.

"It was a balanced game from both teams," said San Jose forward Joe Thornton. "Just that one shot got through and that was the difference. The goalies were great tonight."

The two goaltenders stood firm through the first two periods and much of the third, but the Bruins were able to break through at 12:25 of the final frame.

Loui Eriksson fired a shot on net from the right wing that was blocked by a defender before it got to the net. The puck, though, dribbled down to the left side where Soderberg slammed it in for his sixth of the year.

"A goal's a goal in this League," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "You get some tough ones that go against you so every once in a while it's good to have some go for you. That's the breaks of the game, and sometimes you have to make them yourself."

San Jose tried to get something going in the remainder of the game, but wasn't able to get any consistent pressure, despite pulling Niemi with over a minute to play for an extra skater.
