Stajan's goal in OT gives Flames rare win in Buffalo
Dec 14, 2013 - 10:53 PM Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Stajan scored 42 seconds into overtime and the Calgary Flames beat the Sabres 2-1 on Saturday for their first win in Buffalo in more than 17 years.Paul Byron tied the game for Calgary 8:19 into the third period after Matt Moulson had given the Sabres a 1-0 lead a little over 2 1/2 minutes earlier.
Karri Ramo made 26 saves in the Flames' first win at Buffalo since March 15, 1996. They had eight losses and one tie in their previous nine trips.
Stajan beat Jhonas Enroth to the far side on a shot from the left circle for the winner. Enroth made 24 saves for the Sabres, who fell to 2-8-2 in their last 12 games.
"We gotta get some breaks. We hit four goal posts today," said Sabres interim coach Ted Nolan. "We just have to keep going until (the players) find themselves."
Byron got the only assist on Stajan's goal, finding his teammate near the point, where Stajan looked like he might take a shot before skating into the circle.
"I had just come off the bench and he saw me coming in. I was actually looking to one-time it, but he threw the pass to me pretty hard," said Stajan. "It was actually a good thing because it was almost like a fake shot."
Moulson scored on a one-timer from the low slot 5:40 into the third period after Zemgus Girgensons carried the puck into the zone and slipped a pass through two players from the low right side.
Byron tied the score for Calgary 2:39 later after Chris Butler fed him a pass from behind the net.
The Flames started a five-game, eight-day road trip with their third straight win away from home and improved to 2-0 since general manager Jay Feaster and assistant general manager John Weisbrod were fired on Thursday.
Calgary's Mike Cammalleri had a goal disallowed in the final seconds of the first period because the Flames had too many skaters on the ice -- seven, plus one in the penalty box.
