Nikitin sends Blue Jackets past Flames in OT

Nov 21, 2013 - 6:26 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Nikita Nikitin scored the game-winner 2:25 into overtime to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames.

Flames goalie Reto Berra was able to stop a shot from point-blank range, but David Savard found Nikitin in front of the net and Berra was unable to recover in time as the puck crossed the goal line for the win.

Nick Foligno also scored and Nikitin had an assist for the Blue Jackets, winners in two of their last three games. Sergei Bobrovsky turned aside 23 shots in the win.

"I thought we battled," Columbus head coach Todd Richards said. "We got the win. We got two points, which is important."

Joe Colborne scored a goal and Berra had 16 saves for Flames, who have dropped seven of their last eight games.

Foligno opened up the scoring 9:21 into the opening period. Nikitin forced a turnover at the blue line and flipped the puck to R.J. Umberger, who found Folgino streaking to the net for his fifth marker of the season.

The Flames tied the game 3:28 into the third. Kris Russell fired a pass to the red line to David Jones, who tapped the disc to Colborne near the blue line. Colborne controlled the puck and was able to backhand it around a defender and into the net to knot things up.

"I felt like in the third period that's where we skated the best, we generated some good pucks at the net," Calgary head coach Bob Hartley said. "The bottom line is it's pretty tough to win when you only have one line going."
