Flames take care of Coyotes
Dec 5, 2013 - 6:24 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Giordano and T.J. Brodie each notched a goal and an assist to lift the Calgary Flames to a 4-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday at Scotiabank Saddledome.Mikael Backlund and Lee Stempniak tallied a goal apiece, while Karri Ramo stopped 29-of-30 shots for the Flames, who have won two straight.
Keith Yandle scored the lone Phoenix goal, while Thomas Greiss gave up all four goals on 18 shots in the setback, the Coyotes' fifth in their last seven games.
Yandle gave Phoenix a 1-0 lead when he beat Ramo to the short-side from the left circle just 4:47 into the game, but Calgary countered with four unanswered goals to run away with the contest.
Brodie brought the Flames even in the closing seconds of the first when he rifled a blast from just above the right faceoff dot that sailed past Greiss to tie the game with under 10 seconds left in the frame.
"We played a really good first period, but got unlucky with a goal at the end of the first period that probably gave them some momentum and we couldn't get it back," Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett said.
Calgary jumped in front 5:48 into the second when Backlund buried a one-timer from the right circle off a slick cross-ice feed from Jiri Hudler.
Giordano gave the Flames a two-goal edge with his power-play marker at 11:46 of the second, as his right point blast tipped off a stick in front and slipped past Greiss for a 3-1 lead.
"The way that this guy works in the gym, the way that he prepares...he's the ultimate pro and that's why he's our captain," Calgary head coach Bob Hartley said of Giordano.
Stempniak added a short-handed tally 2:44 into the third to account for the final margin.
