Flames beat Hurricanes late in OT to cap interesting day

Dec 13, 2013 - 6:53 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Butler netted the winning goal inside of four seconds remaining in overtime to lift Calgary past Carolina, 2-1, from the Saddledome.

Brian McGrattan also lit the lamp for the Flames, who put together a satisfying end to a trying day which began with a front-office shake-up as general manager Jay Feaster and his assistant John Weisbrod fired.

Team president of hockey operations Brian Burke will assume the duties of general manager until a suitable replacement can be found.

"I'm not a patient person," Burke said upon making the announcement. "I've said this before. I was born impatient. I'm going to die impatient. I know that. It can't come as fast as I'd like it to come. This is all about having a parade. Our team's struggling. We're near the bottom of the standings."

Karri Ramo stopped 29 shots, including a Jeff Skinner penalty shot in the third period.

Skinner provided the lone tally for the Hurricanes, while Justin Peters made 28 saves to ensure one point for the visitors as they continued a four-game road trip.

An unlikely source, McGrattan, snapped the scoreless deadlock on his first of the season at 17:49 of the second period with a low forehand shot.

Skinner then beat Ramo from the bottom of the right circle to even the score with 8:50 left in regulation.

Skinner was hooked from behind with 5:25 remaining during a 4-on-4, and though he was able to squeeze off a chance, a penalty shot was granted.

Ramo was equal on the free chance, an attempt for the five hole.

"I tried to open him up but he didn't really bite on my fake. I probably shouldn't have forced it in there," Skinner said.
