Ramo's first NHL clean sheet helps Flames beat Hurricanes
Jan 14, 2014 - 6:35 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Karri Ramo stopped 23 shots to post his first career NHL shutout, as Calgary silenced Carolina, 2-0, on Monday.Ramo had played 48 games with the Lightning from 2006-09, and spent the next four seasons in Russia before the Flames took a chance on the 27-year-old Finn in the offseason. He posted 18 whitewashes for Avangard Omsk in the KHL.
Mikael Backlund and Sean Monahan provided offense for the Flames, who put a three-game losing skid to rest.
"It was probably our best team effort of the season," Calgary head coach Bob Hartley said.
Anton Khudobin was the hard-luck loser after making 27 saves for the Hurricanes, blanked for the second straight game after winning five in a row.
"They got the lead, and once they did, they were able to sit back a little bit and defend," Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller said.
Backlund snapped the scoreless deadlock on the power play with 4:34 left in the second period, digging at a loose puck in the crease and sliding it home.
The visitors went up by two as Monahan tucked one past Khudobin near the midway point of the third.
T.J. Galiardi started the rush inside his own zone on the left wing, cruised to the Carolina line and dished off for Paul Byron, whose pass to the rookie found the back of the net.
Ramo, who had an easy time with five saves in the first period, halted 12 shots in the second and finished off his milestone victory with six stops in the third.
