Jets continue winning ways by downing Flames
Jan 17, 2014 - 5:29 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Olli Jokinen, Bryan Little and Mark Scheifele each posted a goal and one assist as Winnipeg downed Calgary, 5-2, at the Saddledome.Jacob Trouba and Dustin Byfuglien also tallied for the Jets, who improved to 2-0 under new head coach Paul Maurice and won on the road for the first time in 2014.
Ondrej Pavelec was solid in net, making 20 saves to help the Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise record its first-ever win in southern Alberta.
"First two periods we were good. Patience and hard working. And then they came on. They had nothing to lose. So there is still some learning for us on how to handle that," said Maurice. "At the end of the day we needed some good things to happen and one of them is your goalie senses that and made some good saves."
Mark Giordano and Lance Bouma scored for the Flames, losers of seven consecutive home contests. Reto Berra surrendered all five goals on just 23 shots in the loss.
Little's rebound off a Michael Frolik try zipped by Berra just after the five- minute mark of the contest, and Byfuglien lit the lamp for the first time since being moved up from defense, making it 2-0 with 8:11 played on a one- timer from the high slot.
Scheifele converted a Blake Wheeler pass to create a three-goal spread for Winnipeg at 9:09 of the second and the Jets were up 4-0 late in the frame thanks to a power-play strike by Jokinen on a shot from the right circle.
Calgary got on the board with Giordano's shot 40 seconds into the third, but the Jets answered at 2:57 on Trouba's marker to re-establish a four-goal advantage.
The Flames climbed within 5-2 on a Bouma tip-in tally with 8:01 to play, but a holding call to defenseman Ladislav Smid put the hosts on the defensive as the clock ticked inside four minutes remaining.
"It's pretty tough to generate energy when you give the first two goals. In the NHL you let guys get great shots right from 10-15 feet from the net you're looking for trouble," stated Flames head coach Bob Hartley. "Obviously with the way that we played here in the past games our confidence is very fragile. You put yourself down 2-0 after a few minutes, we made it tough on ourselves."
