Ramo, Flames take down Sharks
Jan 31, 2014 - 5:29 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Karri Ramo is just the latest goaltender to give the San Jose Sharks fits.Ramo made 27 saves and the Calgary Flames beat San Jose 4-1 on Thursday for their first four-game winning streak in almost two years.
Lee Stempniak, Mark Giordano, Sean Monahan and Jiri Hudler scored for the Flames, who remained perfect on a five-game homestand that ends Saturday against Minnesota.
It's Calgary's first four-game winning streak since a five-gamer from March 6-15, 2012.
"I told you a few weeks ago that I have tons of respect for our players. Tonight is not different. It is even better," said Flames coach Bob Hartley. "Those guys never stop working and right now they're getting rewarded. As a coaching staff we cannot be more happy then we are right now. Those guys deserve the credit.
"We beat quite a hockey club tonight. From Karri Ramo to the six D to the four lines, everyone is chipping in. I would say by far it is probably our best team win of the season."
The Sharks had gone without a goal for 160 minutes and 36 seconds before Eriah Hayes scored the first of his career 36 seconds into the third period.
They were shut out in two straight games, culminating in Wednesday's 3-0 loss to Edmonton, when Ben Scrivens stopped 59 San Jose shots to set an NHL record for saves in a regular-season shutout.
Now, San Jose has one goal in its last 110 shots. Los Angeles' Jonathan Quick made 23 saves in a 1-0 win over the Sharks on Monday.
"It's a big concern of ours right now," admitted Sharks coach Todd McLellan, who said he thinks teams are playing them with a lot of confidence and not a lot to lose.
"Obviously with injuries, and every team goes through them, we need some others to pick up the slack and we've got to find that. Hayes getting his first tonight is a nice reward for him and a good thing for our team but he didn't have much support around him."
Alex Stalock allowed three goals on 29 shots against the Flames.
Stempniak scored 9:41 into the game off Mikael Backlund's rebound to give the Flames a 1-0 lead. Giordano was in the right place for a long rebound off the end boards and scored on a slap shot 3:38 into the second period to make it 2-0.
Hayes' goal was the first for San Jose since Joe Thornton's overtime winner against Minnesota on Saturday. The rookie winger scored at the end of a tic- tac-toe with teammates Patrick Marleau and Tommy Wingels after the Sharks stole the puck.
Monahan scored from in front 13 minutes into the last period on a pass from Joe Colborne and Hudler added an empty-netter.
