Pominville leads Wild past Canes

Nov 10, 2013 - 5:36 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jason Pominville netted his 200th career goal and scored in the shootout to give the Minnesota Wild a 3-2 edge over the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena.

Neither team could break a 2-2 tie in overtime. All three Minnesota shooters scored in the shootout. Zach Parise led off going in with a leg kick, moving from backhand to forehand to easily beat Jason Peters.

After Riley Nash rang a shot off the post for Carolina, Mikko Koivu quickly lifted a backhand shot into the net. Chris Terry kept Carolina in it with a backhander over Josh Harding. Pominville faked Peters and slipped the puck through the fivehole to give Minnesota the shootout win after losing to Washington, 3-2, in a shootout on Thursday.

Justin Fontaine lit the lamp for Minnesota's other goal during regulation. Harding stopped 27-of-29 shots to give the Wild their fourth win in their last five contests.

"We were bound to win in a shootout one of these times. We had the guys going. The ice wasn't the best in the third, but we have to have a better third. The end result is what we needed," said Fontaine on the shootout win.

Ryan Murphy and Jiri Tlusty scored for Carolina. Peters allowed two goals on 30 shots as Carolina had their win streak halted at two games.

"We played a really solid game, I thought, from start to finish. It was a lot of fun to be apart of out there. I just wish I could have gotten one of those shootout goals to give us a chance," said Peters.

Pominville took a stretch pass from Ryan Suter, got behind the defense to put the Wild ahead 3:33 into the contest.

Carolina drew even less than two minutes later. Murphy notched his second of the season on a shot that deflected off Wild defenseman Nate Prosser and past an unsuspecting Harding.

Tlusty broke the tie with a backhander that was slipped through the pads of Harding 7:14 into the second.

Fontaine deflected a shot from Marco Scandella at the blue line past Peters to tie the game 11:22 into the second.

Overtime brought good chances for both teams. Parise had an open look at the net, but fired the puck over the net. The Hurricanes rushed down the ice on a two-on-one. Alexander Semin shot the puck, but a diving Jared Spurgeon recovered to block the shot.

Mikael Granlund took a penalty for a hook on Jordan Staal. Carolina went on the power play with a little over a minute remaining in the first, but could not convert.
