Gudas sends Bolts past Hurricanes with OT strike

Dec 22, 2013 - 4:31 AM Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Radko Gudas scored 2:16 into overtime to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Gudas potted his second goal of the year after skating into the Carolina end and unleashing a rising shot that beat Justin Peters high to the glove side from the right circle.

Right before the goal, Gudas muscled Carolina's Jeff Skinner into the boards, but no penalty was called. Nate Thompson then delivered the outlet pass that had Gudas break into the offensive zone unchallenged.

Victor Hedman scored in the first period and Martin St. Louis tied the game with a power-play marker in the third for Tampa Bay, which won its fourth in a row. The Lightning also moved to 6-1-0 against Carolina since the beginning of the 2012-13 season.

Ben Bishop made 25 saves for the Lightning, while Peters stopped 47 shots.

"They were throwing a lot of rubber to the net," Peters said. "We battled hard, but unfortunately we weren't able to get the two points."

Jiri Tlusty scored both goals for the Hurricanes, who have lost two straight and five of their last six contests.

Tlusty scored 4:35 into the game on a wrister from the high slot, but Hedman had the equalizer with 3:48 left on a shot from the low left circle.

"We just had to keep shooting pucks. We knew sooner than later it was going to go in," Hedman said.

Tlusty put Carolina ahead midway through the second by converting a breakaway, but St. Louis made it 2-2 at 7:56 of the third on a deflection in front of a Hedman shot.

Game Notes

Lightning defenseman Eric Brewer left the game with an upper-body injury ... Peters made a spectacular glove save to stop a rising shot from Valtteri Filppula with 1:04 left in the second period. Officials used replay to determine there was no goal as Peters pinned the puck against the right post before pulling it back into his glove ... Filppula had two assists ... Tampa Bay improved to 14-3-1 at home.
