Hurricanes edge Predators

Jan 6, 2014 - 4:27 AM Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Skinner scored the game-winner with 3:31 remaining to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-1 win over the Nashville Predators on Sunday.

Alexander Semin had a goal and an assist, Tuomo Ruutu had two assists and Skinner added a helper for the Hurricanes, winners in four straight. Anton Khudobin made 31 saves in the win.

"The guys we needed to score for us in a grinding type game came through for us," said Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller.

Patric Hornqvist scored the lone goal for the Predators, losers in three straight and seven of their last nine. Carter Hutton made 23 saves but allowed both goals in the setback.

"They put a lot into it. We should have had five out of six points on this trip. We come back with two and that's discouraging," said Nashville coach Barry Trotz.

Semin opened up the scoring 4:28 into the contest. Skinner's shot from the left circle was stopped and trickled behind the net, but Semin was there to collect the loose disc and shot it off Hutton's back for a 1-0 edge.

Hornqvist deflected a Mike Fisher shot at 6:46 of the third to tie things up. Shea Weber fired a shot from the left circle that Khudobin stopped. The goaltender was drawn out of the net, though, and Fisher tried to put the rebound back on the open net. Hornqvist got a stick on it before it crossed the line for the goal.

Ruutu passed the puck to Skinner from behind the net and he quickly shot it past Hutton for the game-winner.
