Blackhawks stage successful return to Winnipeg
Nov 2, 2013 - 10:51 PM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Crawford made 26 saves and the Chicago Blackhawks rode an offensive barrage to a 5-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets at MTS Centre. The Blackhawks scored five unanswered goals, including three in a 4:55 span early in the second period to chase Winnipeg goaltender Ondrej Pavelec.
Nick Leddy and Brandon Bollig both tallied once and picked up an assist for Chicago, which has won three consecutive games.
Tobias Enstrom had the lone goal in the Jets' third straight loss. They have dropped six of seven overall. Al Montoya stopped 10 shots in relief of Pavelec and received help from the crossbar on Patrick Kane's third-period penalty shot.
Chicago moved ahead 54 seconds into the second period. Bollig and Marcus Kruger charged across the Winnipeg blue line on a 2-on-1 and Bollig wristed a shot past Pavelec's blocker.
Patrick Sharp increased the lead to 3-1 at 2:41 after an offensive-zone turnover. Leddy broke up a pass, triggering a counterattack. Sharp collected a Marian Hossa stretch pass at the opposing blue line, got Pavelec to go down with a nifty deke and found the open net.
Leddy made it 4-1 at 5:49 when he took an indirect feed and hammered a left- point shot behind Pavelec, who had his vision obscured by a Bryan Bickell screen.
"We said in the room (after the second period) we have to go after them and don't quit, but they didn't give up much," Jets forward Michael Frolik said.
Pavelec recorded only 10 saves.
Shortly after Kane's backhander struck iron, Ben Smith beat Montoya on a redirection near the midway point of the third.
The teams traded goals from defenseman in the first period.
Matt Halischuk worked the puck up the wall to the right point to Enstrom and he fired a slap shot through traffic and behind Crawford to give Winnipeg a lead at the 5:08 mark.
The Chicago goaltender was irate, feeling he had been interfered by Frolik as Crawford's stick got tangled up in the jersey of the ex-Blackhawk.
Niklas Hjalmarsson tied the game with a shot from the blue line at 9:58 after Kruger won a faceoff cleanly.
"We had a good start to that second period, first period we were lucky to be even there, (Crawford) kept us in the game," said Chicago coach Joel Quenneville.
