Red Wings clip Blackhawks in shootout

Jan 23, 2014 - 7:01 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Darren Helm scored the game-winner in the sixth round of the shootout, as the Detroit Red Wings claimed a 5-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday at Joe Louis Arena.

After Tomas Tatar came up empty to open the shootout, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Eaves, Patrick Sharp and Todd Bertuzzi each scored in succession to keep it going.

Following misses from the next five shooters, Helm ripped a quick shot under Corey Crawford's pads and Jonas Gustavsson denied Andrew Shaw at the other end to secure the victory for the Red Wings.

"They're a great team and we played well right from the start," Eaves said. "We needed these two points worse than they [did]. It's huge for us and hopefully it will springboard us to something else."

Gustav Nyquist notched a goal and an assist, while Eaves, Tatar and Kyle Quincey each scored once for the Red Wings, who exacted a measure of revenge for last year's loss to Chicago in the Western Conference semifinals.

Gustavsson stopped 31 shots in the victory, Detroit's second in its last three games.

Sharp, Shaw, Marcus Kruger and Marian Hossa each lit the lamp once for Chicago, which had a two-game win streak snapped.

Crawford allowed four goals on 31 shots in defeat.

"We weren't very good tonight," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "They worked hard. They were the harder-working team and getting ourselves a point out of there, with a chance for two in the shootout, certainly we'll take a point because we didn't play well enough or hard enough."

Hossa opened the scoring with his 21st of the season at 8:41 of the first period and Shaw followed with a tap-in rebound from in front at 10:26 to double Chicago's lead.

Tatar answered 48 seconds later with a wrister from the low right circle and Eaves evened the score at 17:40 when he picked up a loose puck in the right circle and rifled a shot high over Crawford's glove to make it 2-2.

Sharp potted a power-play goal 5:03 into the second to put Chicago back on top, but the Red Wings responded with back-to-back goals later in the frame to grab their first lead of the game.

Quincey pulled Detroit even with his third of the season at 6:20, while Nyquist pounded one home from in front off a slick one-touch feed from Henrik Zetterberg to give the Red Wings a 4-3 lead at 11:14.

However, Kruger found the equalizer early in the third, picking off a Brendan Smith pass in the high slot before ripping a shot past Gustavsson's blocker to tie the tilt 5:12 into the final frame.

Chicago outshot Detroit 5-2 in overtime, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, forcing the contest into a shootout.

Chicago had won seven straight regular-season games against Detroit ... The Blackhawks fell to 14-5-5 on the road this season ... Detroit will visit Chicago on March 16 to complete the season series ... Detroit improved to 8-11-7 as the host this season ...
