Varlamov starts, Avs beat Stars in OT
Nov 2, 2013 - 4:45 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Avalanche started goaltender Semyon Varlamov after his recent arrest and continued their torrid run Friday night.Paul Stastny scored his second goal at the 3:36 mark of overtime to lift the Avalanche to a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center.
Varlamov, who made 27 saves, played two days after turning himself in on domestic violence-related charges in Denver. He faces charges of second-degree kidnapping and third-degree assault.
"I think I am the luckiest guy in the world because I play in the NHL and I play for this team," Varlamov said. "I've got such good teammates, so I don't think about what's happening. Like I said before, no comments on that. I think I felt very comfortable today and the team and I played a good game."
Gabriel Landeskog had the other goal for the Avalanche, who are 11-1-0 to match the 1994-95 Quebec Nordiques for the best start through 12 games in franchise history. They also tied the club record with six consecutive road wins to begin the season.
The Stars erased a 2-0 deficit in the third period behind Tyler Seguin, who set up Alex Goligoski for the first Dallas goal before tying the game with 3:29 remaining.
Kari Lehtonen stopped 26 shots for Dallas, which has dropped five of its last seven games.
"Still have to figure out a way to get that full (60-minute) effort," Seguin said.
Seguin pulled up, spun around and fed Goligoski for a one-timer from the top of the left circle 3:57 into the third.
The Stars continued to press and Seguin netted the equalizer. He gathered a pass from Rich Peverley at the Colorado blue line and skated down the middle before firing a wrister behind Varlamov.
In the extra session, Stastny carried the puck into the Dallas zone and let go a snap shot from the left faceoff dot that beat Lehtonen on the glove side.
Stastny opened the scoring from below the right circle off a backhand feed through the slot from Alex Tanguay 8:22 into the contest. Landeskog ripped a slap shot from the left circle underneath Lehtonen with 1:19 remaining in the second period.
