Stars edge Avs with Sceviour's late goal

Dec 18, 2013 - 6:22 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Colton Sceviour scored with 2:52 left in the third period to lift the Dallas Stars over the Colorado Avalanche, 3-2, in the finale of a home-and-home series.

Ray Whitney scored a pair of goals for the Stars, who bounced back from a 6-2 loss to these Avalanche on Monday. Dan Ellis stopped 25-of-27 shots.

Matt Duchene and Erik Johnson each had a goal and an assist for Colorado, which went 1-for-6 on the power play. Jean-Sebastien Giguere turned aside 25- of-28 shots.

"We're better at it, to be honest with you," Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said on his team's game management. "I think it's unfortunate for us tonight. We had our chance. You saw on the power play, you don't need to make pretty plays all the time. You just put pucks on the net and pick up the rebounds. This is how you score goals in the NHL now. A screen or a point shot with traffic, and then a rebound, that's what we need to do more."

Dallas forward Ryan Garbutt earned a double-minor for a high stick 1:03 into the game. The Avalanche quickly capitalized as Duchene put home a rebound at 2:37.

The Stars tied it up at 7:31 when Whitney scored off a pass from Shawn Horcoff.

The Avalanche regained the lead midway through the middle stanza when Johnson beat Ellis with a shot from the right circle.

While on the power play, Whitney scored from the right circle at 17:19 to make it a 2-2 contest.

The Stars were unable to capitalize on a 5-on-3 power play early in the third stanza.

Sceviour's second NHL goal gave Dallas a 3-2 lead. Sceviour scored on a breakaway following a nice pass from Rich Peverley.

"Anytime you score a game winning goal it's pretty exciting, especially at the NHL level it's even more exciting and late in the third like that it's a great feeling for sure, I'm glad it went in," Sceviour said.
