Jets score late in OT to beat Avs

Dec 30, 2013 - 5:31 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Blake Wheeler scored 4:58 into overtime to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 2-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday.

Andrew Ladd netted the game's first goal for Winnipeg 11:42 into the third period. Until then, Al Montoya and Semyon Varlamov kept every shot out of their nets.

On the winner, Wheeler scored from the low slot after Mark Scheifele fed him a pass from the right side.

Wheeler said he had "no idea" there was that little time left.

"I knew it was close to the end," he said. "Monty made a great save at our end and I knew we had one more whack at it."

Montoya had 33 saves for Winnipeg, including five in overtime. The Jets won their second in a row.

"I thought this was a good road win for us," said Ladd. "We kept getting the pucks deep tonight and when we keep doing something over and over again something good comes from it."

Nathan MacKinnon scored the tying goal for Colorado just 29 seconds after Ladd's but the Avs suffered their season-worst fourth loss in a row. The first three came on an 0-1-2 road trip against Los Angeles, San Jose and Chicago -- three of the top teams in the Western Conference.

Those tough losses followed by Sunday's heartbreaker was a lot to take.

"We have to be able to hang on there (at the end)," said MacKinnon. "We have to generate more shots and be a little more simple-minded, especially in physical games like that."

The Avs started a seven-game homestand. They lost winger PA Parenteau to a left knee injury in the second period.

Wheeler assisted on Ladd's goal with a backhand pass from behind the net into the slot. MacKinnon's goal came on a slapshot from the right side.
