Avalanche storm back, take down Senators in OT

Jan 9, 2014 - 5:54 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Paul Stastny scored the tying goal with 2:20 left in the third period and assisted on Tyson Barrie's game-winning tally 33 seconds into overtime as the Colorado Avalanche edged the Ottawa Senators, 4-3, at Pepsi Center.

The Avalanche jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest on goals by Jamie McGinn and Jan Hejda before the Senators stormed ahead in the second period.

Gabriel Landeskog collected three assists and Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves for Colorado, which improved to 4-1-1 on its season-long, seven-game homestand.

Craig Anderson stopped 27 shots for the Senators, who had their winning streak snapped at four games and suffered their sixth straight loss to the Avalanche.

The former Avalanche netminder stymied Colorado after being beaten twice in the first 4:54, but Stastny was able to knot the game after a strong drive to the net by Landeskog.

The Avalanche captain had the puck poke checked away by Anderson and Stastny followed up the play by going around the prone goaltender and placing the puck into an open net.

Colorado carried the momentum into overtime, hemming the Senators in their zone. Stastny had control of the puck behind the Ottawa net and dished to the right circle, where Barrie ripped a wrist shot past Anderson. On the defenseman's decisive marker, an Ottawa player lost his stick, hindering the team's ability to defend.

"(Stastny) was just kind of stick-handling there just waiting for me to get open and I found a lane and then he made a great pass and I was able to put it in," Barrie said.

Ottawa captain Jason Spezza scored a 5-on-3 goal in his return to the lineup. Spezza, who missed four games with a hip injury, wasn't pleased with his team's start or play in the third period.

"We didn't have a good start to the game, but we played a really good hockey game after that," he said. "We sat back too much and we gave them too many chances to tie the game, and in overtime anything can happen."

A redirection by McGinn on an early power play staked Colorado to a 1-0 lead at 2:19 of the first period. Hejda made it 2-0 with a slap shot from the point.

"We started really hot and then I think they took over at the end of the first period there, then we kind of lost it," McGinn said.

Clarke MacArthur scored in his fourth straight game to put the Senators on the board with 4:58 to go in the opening frame. Bobby Ryan forced a turnover in the Colorado zone and fed MacArthur from behind the net for a one-timer.

Ottawa seized the lead by scoring two goals in a 1:25 span.

Spezza tied it on a two-man advantage when he positioned himself at the left post and converted MacArthur's crossing pass at 12:53. Kyle Turris put the visitors on top as he hammered Mark Stone's feed and beat Varlamov high from the left circle at 14:18, four seconds after the other minor penalty expired.

Game Notes

Landeskog extended his point streak to a career-high eight games (3g,8a) ... Ottawa hasn't beaten the Avalanche since Dec. 12, 2005 ... The Avalanche were without forward Ryan O'Reilly (shoulder) and defenseman Nate Guenin (ankle).
