Final
Landeskog, Avalanche down Coyotes
Mar 1, 2014 - 5:24 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Gabriel Landeskog had one goal and two assists to help the Colorado Avalanche take a 4-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes.Paul Stastny added one goal and one assist and Nathan MacKinnon had two helpers for the Avalanche, who are 1-1 following the Olympic break. Semyon Varlamov made 40 saves in the win.
Shane Doan scored both goals for the Coyotes, losers in three straight. Thomas Greiss allowed four goals on 33 shots in the setback.
The teams entered the final frame knotted up at 1-1, but Nate Guenin scored just 48 seconds into the frame. Landeskog flipped the puck back to Guenin, who fired a wrister through for a 2-1 edge.
"They got the early one in the third and that really hurt us. We had our chances and just couldn't bury them," Doan said.
Stastny added a goal at the 6:12 mark. MacKinnon was stoned on a breakaway, but Landeskog got the rebound and fired it to Stastny, who deposited the disc into a wide-open net.
Doan had the Coyotes within a goal when he got his second power-play marker to go, but Landeskog scored at 16:49 to seal the win.
"I thought we were good in the first, tough in the second and came on strong in the third. We played well as a team and guys got open tonight," MacKinnon said.
Doan opened the scoring with his power-play goal at 12:47 of the first period. Mikkel Boedker threaded a shot through traffic and the puck bounced to Doan who backhanded it home from point-blank range.
Nearly three minutes later, P.A. Parenteau beat Greiss with a slapper on the power play to even the score. Parenteau riffled a shot through congestion in front of the net, banging the puck off the post before it made its way into the back of the goal.
Game Notes
Parenteau has scored in two straight games and has points in three straight ... MacKinnon has a point in 10 straight games, the longest streak for a rookie this season ... Greiss was 4-0-0 all-time against the Avs entering the game.
