Jackets top Kings for franchise-best 7th straight win
Jan 22, 2014 - 6:14 AM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - R.J. Umberger scored twice and the Columbus Blue Jackets pushed their winning streak to a franchise-record seven games with a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.Ryan Johansen, Nathan Horton and Artem Anisimov also scored for the Blue Jackets, who surpassed the previous record of six straight games set between March 24-April 3, 2006.
Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves to extend his personal winning streak to eight games.
The Blue Jackets are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
"We have a lot of confidence right now and that makes it easier," said Umberger.
Dwight King, Jeff Carter and Robyn Regehr scored for the Kings, who have lost three in a row. Martin Jones gave up five goals on 34 shots.
"We're doing what bad teams are doing," said LA forward Justin Williams. "We're allowing special teams goals, breakdown goals. When teams score goals against us, they (should have to) earn them."
Columbus scored three straight goals to take the lead for good, starting with Umberger's second of the game from the left boards on a shot he just threw on net.
That came with 1:45 left in the second period and Horton scored at 19:44 on a 2-on-2 with Anisimov, whose goal on a drive to the net between two defenders with 4:41 left in the game made it 5-2. Regehr scored under two minutes later.
King opened the scoring 2:42 into the game when he scored on a rebound from the slot after Trevor Lewis' sharp-angle shot, but the Blue Jackets netted two in a row to take the lead.
Umberger scored his first goal on a power play at 12:47 of the first period and Johansen gave Columbus the lead with 58 seconds left, getting behind Kings defenseman Regehr and dragging the puck in front of the crease before flipping it over Jones' shoulder and into the top-right corner.
Carter tied the score at 2-2 8:39 into the second period after a tic-tac-toe play with Mike Richards.
