Final
Doughty, Kings down Stars
Oct 20, 2013 - 6:28 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Drew Doughty scored the winner early in the third period to lead the Los Angeles Kings in a 5-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday.Justin Williams had two goals and an assist, Matt Greene had a goal and an assist, while Kyle Clifford also lit the lamp for the Kings, who have won two straight and five of six. Jonathan Quick stopped 27 shots in the win.
"I certainly wanted to get that third (goal), I wanted to see the ice littered with hats, but the most important thing is we won and we won on home ice," Williams said.
Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley scored for the Stars, who have dropped three of their last four. Dan Ellis was tagged for four goals on 33 shots in the loss.
"We just have to become a team that can hold it together a little longer," said Dallas head coach Lindy Ruff. "We really do have to eliminate some of the big turnovers. We had some turnovers that were inexcusable tonight."
With the score tied in the third, Los Angeles went on top as a pass from the left point by Williams went to the low right side where Doughty was able to sneak it in between the pads of Ellis at 4:42.
Clifford gave his team some insurance with 6:58 to play as his simple wrister from the left wing knuckleballed its way past Ellis for a 4-2 advantage.
Greene put the puck in the empty-net from his own end in the final minute of play to seal the win.
Dallas got on the board at 8:49 of the first period as Jamie Benn's wrister from the top of the left circle was deflected past Quick by Seguin for a 1-0 lead.
Los Angeles tied the game at 16:31 of the first as Jake Muzzin fired the puck from the left side to the front where it went off Williams and in.
Skating on the power play, the Kings took a 2-1 lead as a scramble in front saw Williams backhand it in from the right side with just 27.1 seconds to play in the first period.
The only goal of the second period went to Dallas, as Benn tried a wraparound from the right side that was stopped, but Peverley banged in the rebound for his second of the year.
