Final
Stars blank Oilers
Nov 14, 2013 - 7:19 AM Edmonton, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Kari Lehtonen posted 22 saves to notch his first shutout of the season, as the Dallas Stars blanked the Edmonton Oilers, 3-0, on Wednesday at Rexall Place.Rich Peverley's second-period marker served as the game's only goal until Tyler Seguin and Antoine Roussel each added an empty-netter in the final minute to send Dallas to its fourth win in five tries.
Devan Dubnyk stopped 23-of-24 shots in defeat for the Oilers, who were blanked for the third straight time at home to mark the longest streak of consecutive home losses via shutout in franchise history.
"It's extremely frustrating not to put some in the back of the net," said Oilers captain Andrew Ference. "It's one of those games again where you can point to positives but at the end of the day, you don't get the job done and don't score and you lose the tight ones."
After Edmonton failed to score on a pair of power plays, including a 5-on-3 early in the second, Peverley put the Stars on top just past the midpoint of the contest.
Peverley threw a weak backhander on net from the left circle that Dubnyk turned aside, but the veteran center recovered his own rebound before lifting the disc high over Dubnyk from the low left side to make it 1-0 at 10:35.
The Oilers couldn't get out of their own way over the remainder of the contest, committing six penalties, including a hooking call on Anton Belov at 16:56 of the third that gave Valeri Nichushkin a penalty shot.
Nichushkin failed to convert the penalty shot, but after Dubnyk left the Edmonton net with around 90 seconds left, Seguin and Roussel each found the back of the empty cage to account for the final margin.
"It was a little bit of a see-saw battle where special teams on both teams could have made a bit of a difference," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "It seemed like penalty killing prevailed. We could have put the game away later when we had our opportunities and we didn't."
