Red Wings rout Stars, sans Datsyuk
Jan 5, 2014 - 6:26 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Henrik Zetterberg scored twice, Jimmy Howard made 44 saves and the Detroit Red Wings bounced back from their Winter Classic loss to beat the Dallas Stars 5-1 on Saturday.Joakim Andersson, Drew Miller and Tomas Tatar also scored for the Red Wings, who snapped a two-game losing streak that included a shootout loss to Toronto on New Year's Day.
Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk missed the game because of a lower-body injury, but they beat the Stars for the seventh time in their last nine meetings.
Rich Peverley had a short-handed goal for Dallas, which went 2-2-1 on a five- game homestand. Dan Ellis allowed three goals on 13 shots in the first period and Kari Lehtonen gave up two on 14 shots after that. Ellis stopped Justin Abdelkader on a penalty shot.
The Red Wings started a five-game road trip. They are off until Thursday's game at San Jose.
"It's great that we can go get freshened up. We have so many injuries," said Detroit coach Mike Babcock. "I've said it already, I'm tired of guys being out and being on the (trainer's) table every day when I go in there. We need our guys to be freshened up and ready to play and we need a big push out of our group."
Zetterberg scored his first goal 7:04 into the game after a loose puck came to him in the left circle.
Peverley tied it with a shorthanded goal from the left side 5:43 later, but the Red Wings scored twice in a 14-second span later in the first period to build a 3-1 lead.
After Andersson's goal from the right side, Miller jammed the puck in from the crease at 18:19 after a shot from Abdelkader.
"Those were frustrating," said Peverley. "We could have done things to avoid those goals but we can learn from these games."
Tatar scored at 11:57 of the second period, freed up to go in alone on Lehtonen after two Stars defenders collided at the point.
Zetterberg's second goal of the game and 14th of the season came at 12:39 of the third period on a one-timer from the left circle.
